European Gas Prices Skyrocket: Qatar's LNG Output Halt Sparks Global Concern
European natural gas prices have surged by a staggering 70% since Friday, with a 30% jump on Tuesday alone, following a 40% surge on Monday. This dramatic rise is primarily attributed to the suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production in Qatar, the world's second-largest LNG exporter. The halt was announced by QatarEnergy due to military attacks on their facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City.
The Dutch TTF Natural Gas Futures, a key benchmark for Europe's gas trading, opened with a 34% surge, though some gains were later trimmed. As of 8:30 a.m. in Amsterdam, prices were still 26% higher than Monday's close. This volatile market situation has raised concerns about energy security in Asia and Europe, especially with the winter heating season drawing to a close.
Gas storage sites in Europe have been depleting at an alarming rate, the fastest in five years, despite below-average winter temperatures that increased heating and power demand. As of March 1, EU gas storage sites were estimated to be only 30% full, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe data. With Qatar's supply disrupted and a significant portion of global LNG trade transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East, competition for LNG supply between Europe and Asia is expected to intensify, further driving up prices.
This crisis comes at a critical time, with the heating season officially ending on March 31. Europe will need substantial LNG cargoes in the spring and summer to replenish depleted gas storage sites. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing Iran war, which has pushed Middle East oil tanker rates to all-time highs and heightened tensions in the region.
