Day, aged 78, was walking his dog, Messi, in Hamersley when a bolt of lightning struck, causing severe burns to his abdomen and thigh and ultimately claiming the life of his furry companion.
Avalos, who was at work, received the devastating news from her husband. She later visited the scene, where her father had been struck, and described the aftermath. The T-shirt he was wearing had been torn, and they had to collect pieces of it along with his handkerchief. Despite the traumatic event, Avalos expressed relief that her father was safe but expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their cherished dog. The family's shock was palpable.
In another incident, a 16-year-old girl, Georgia Rizzi, was struck by lightning while at her school's tennis court in Mount Helena. She and her friends witnessed the thunder and lightning, and as they approached the sports courts, their hair stood on end. A loud bang followed, and the lightning struck a nearby basketball hoop, causing injuries to Rizzi and her friend. Rizzi vividly recalled the pain on her head and the sensation of her spine vibrating. She felt numb in her feet and started crying. Her friends assisted her to the school office, where teachers noticed her stuttering and difficulty standing. They took her and her friend to a nearby room, advised them to lie on the floor with their feet elevated, and called an ambulance.
Rizzi was taken to the hospital, where several tests, including one on her heart, were conducted. She was eventually discharged and instructed to monitor her symptoms. Despite some spine pain, she reported feeling well. The school staff responded promptly, and the students were taken to the hospital as a precaution. The WA Department of Education confirmed that two students reported feeling unwell after being struck by lightning.
The rarity of such incidents was emphasized by St John WA manager Deane Coxall, who stated that it was incredibly unusual for three people to be injured by lightning strikes in a single day. He has been in his role for almost 15 years and has never encountered a similar case, especially in Western Australia. Coxall urged people to take precautions during stormy conditions, as the risk, though minimal, still exists. He advised protecting oneself and seeking immediate medical attention if someone is affected by a lightning strike.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) recorded approximately 10,000 lightning strikes during the thunderstorms that swept across the metropolitan area and the southern regions of Western Australia. It is estimated that around 100 people in Australia are struck by lightning annually, with between five and ten fatalities resulting from these injuries.
