Rivers State's Political Turmoil: President's Intervention and the APC's Stance
In a recent development, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara paid a visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on September 22, 2025. This encounter sparked discussions about the President's role in the ongoing political crisis within the state.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has justified the President's intervention, arguing that it aligns with his duty to maintain peace and order across the nation. According to the party, the President's actions were taken to ensure the stability of Rivers State, which has been grappling with a political crisis involving Governor Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The President's decision to suspend the impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Fubara has sparked controversy. Some have labeled this move as an interruption of a constitutional process. In response, Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party, defended the President's actions, emphasizing that the President's role was to provide counsel and advice to those involved in the crisis.
Morka clarified that the President did not interfere with the constitutional process but rather offered guidance to the warring factions. He stated, 'The President has not aborted any constitutional process. He provided his counsel as the President to those involved. His actions were in line with our constitutional democracy.'
Addressing concerns about the President's involvement in Rivers State's affairs, Morka argued that the President's concern for the state's peace and stability was justified, especially considering the potential for violence. He said, 'The President's concern is valid, as he has a responsibility to ensure the well-being of every part of the country.'
Furthermore, Morka discussed the role of former Governor Nyesom Wike and the current Governor Fubara, both members of the ruling APC. He acknowledged Wike's significance while emphasizing Fubara's leadership within the party in the state.
In addition to the political crisis, there have been baseless fears about a potential U.S. military invasion of the country under the guise of combating terrorism. Morka dismissed these fears, asserting that the federal government has provided sufficient explanations regarding the U.S. military activities, which are part of the global war on terror.
